Shirley has been a Reader at St John’s since for nearly 20 years and is a firm believer in the value of Reader ministry.
She has also run a young wives' group in the church (when she was a young wife herself!) as well as organising Sunday School, found herself writing an ‘alternative’ nativity play each year and introduced the idea of pathfinders for the 11+ age.
Shirley also did a spell as PCC Secretary and a very short spell as churchwarden to ‘ease in’ the new vicar.
In a previous life Shirley gained an M.A. in History at Leeds University and was Head of Sixth Form in its formative years at Crawshaw School.
Known for preferring a good book and pen as opposed to anything ‘mobile’ or online, she also enjoys cricket, crosswords and good conversation over anything in liquid form. She has enjoyed travelling to places of ancient historical interest and especially to Syria in 2002.
She was married to Brian for 40 years. His death from vascular dementia partly motivates her helping to run the Sunflower Memory Cafe at St John’s.
Shirley has two daughters. One is a lay reader at St Thomas’ Church, Stanningley and the other lives in Bermuda. She has a grand-daughter who is interested in a career in aerospace engineering.
